Pain's Impact

Did you realize that research indicates pain is reason most Americans seek medical treatment? Were you aware that doctors treat more patients with back difficulty than with any other sort of pain? In truth, a projected 26 million Americans 20-64 years old endure persistent back pain. A range of pain-related illnesses consists of hip, neck, and knee pain, migraine headaches, arthritis, pain within the lower face/jaw, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis.

It is upsetting the level to which persistent pain takes its toll on the United States economy. Its impacts range from mounting costs of healthcare, to reduced production and lowered earnings. Each year, the cost is estimated to be as high as $100 billion. Unhappily, this figure is out of balance with personal health-related expenses, and the toll on our population is not needed.

To a large degree, the impact of chronic pain goes unnoticed. Impacts include loss of energy, bouts of anger, lack of interest, and thoughts of despair. Regrettably, relationships with people most valued to us, chiefly close friends and family, suffer the most. Just as discouraging is the lack of sympathy toward those afflicted with pain. When one is disabled by pain, absent plain sign of trauma, family and even the closest friends often don't grasp the severity of the loved one's predicament. As a rule, resources allocated to chronic pain are by no means enough, although it is fortuitous that enterprising services like ours can proffer significant hope to thousands bearing the weight of chronic pain.
